Democrats are increasingly using two of these tactics in fierce attacks on the Bush administration. Democrats are using tactics regarding the situation in Iraq, Gitmo, and the recent story about Karl Rove’s involvement in the exposed CIA agent case.
Democrats are using the tactics of the mere exposure theory as well as the halo effect to make the case to the American people that the Bush administration is moving the country in the wrong direction. The first example is Iraq. As the invasion ended and the occupation of Iraq ensued the situation on the ground began to deteriorate and no WMD’s were found. In an effort to attack the administration and better their position among the voters, Democrats began to circulate the idea that Iraq was quickly turning into another Vietnam.
Now most scholars would agree that there are major differences between the situation in Iraq, where there is a clear defined mission, and Vietnam, where a clear mission was lacking and the military was not fully engaged. But as many prominent democrats, such as Ted Kennedy, attempted to do was create doubt in the minds of the American people by attempting to convince them that Iraq was indeed another Vietnam.
This is where marketing and persuasion comes into play. By saying Iraq/Vietnam in the same breath they are using the mere exposure theory which states that people are more likely to accept something the more they hear it. The simpler version of this theory is "tell a lie enough times and people will believe it". The second part the marketing use is the "halo effect". This is simply transferring some credibility from one thing to another. This is usually done with celebrities endorsing products when the producer of the product wants the positive credibility of the celebrity transferred to the product.
However, democrats use this halo effect in the reverse sense. In the case of Iraq, they couple Iraq with the negative connotations associated Vietnam.
When the alleged abuses at Gitmo surfaced Democrats again undertook this strategy in an attempt to create a unified attack on the president. They believed that an attack on the administration on the alleged abuses would result in the dismissal of key senior administration figures, most notably Don Rumsfield. So many democrats came out saying that the alleged abuses reminded them of acts that Nazis had committed out some other evil regime. Again, democrats attempted to mention Gitmo/evil regimes in the same context to sway public opinion.
In the Gitmo case this backfired on the democrats. Many, including Senator Dick Durbin, were publicly ridiculed due to extremes that they tried to link soldiers at Gitmo to Nazis and others. But this was another example of the continuance of the tactic by democrats.
Recently the tactic became evident again with the increasing media coverage of the Justice Departments investigation into the leaked identity of a CIA agent. When it was widely speculated that the president’s deputy chief of staff Karl Rove was involved in the uncovering of the CIA agents identity, top democrats beat the drum of this adopted tactic. They began saying that this could be as bad as what happened in the Watergate scandal during the Nixson days.
This is an attempt to sway public opinion and drive down the president’s approval numbers in hopes of forcing the president into removing Rove, a clear and symbolic victory for the democrats.
I am not saying that this is the first time that these theories have been used, but what I am pointing out is that this a dramatic leap for democrats who are desperately grasping for leverage with the public. They are using extremes when comparing activities of the Bush administration to examples in history. This is just one more example of the democrat’s strategy of demonizing the administration. So, when will the polarizing of American politics cease, time will tell.

College students hold their breath

A man is challenging the Protective Custody Law, which allows the police to take people to jail if they are, or appear drunk. It would be my prediction that the forces that would like to see gambling and the lottery legalized in Arkansas will try to take advantage of this opportunity to advance their cause. But will it really help? Look at Mississippi. They have legalized gambling and what is the state of its schools….miserable.

Good take from Cavuto

This is a good piece from Neil Cavuto of FoxNews on why the author of “The Truth About Hillary Clinton” cannot seem to find airtime to promote his new book.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,160539,00.html

What If?

Here is a particularly interesting question. What would a Democratic Presidential victory in ‘o8 mean for the foreign policy agenda set by Bush for the past few years? Let’s suppose for a moment that, albeit a horrible proposition, Hillary is elected president. Will her hatred of the war in Iraq translate in a immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq? Or will she perhaps bit the bullet and stay the course in what will be a long-term commitment in Iraq? Will she close Gitmo? Would she repeal the Bush tax cuts?

I believe that during the election she will slam the administration’s “rush to war”, “Nazi-like acts” at Gitmo, and other acts that she believes to be the utter failure of the Bush presidency.

I believe if she were elected she would order a withdrawal of forces from Iraq, leaving only a small number there. This would be a terrible mistake, but hey this is what democrats want. It would be a return to the days of her husband, which incidentally would be serving his third term through his wife, when the United States enjoyed widespread goodwill throughout the world, while letting terrorists run wide and taking a non-action approach to threats that face the United States.

Can we afford to have Hillary (and Bill) in the White House? I personally think that it would be the biggest mistake that we could make as a country. Can we sacrifice our safety at the expense of winning the French, Germans, and Italians back over?

Support our military and their families

This is a website that I would recommend that everyone visits and makes an effort to contribute in some way to. The names have been omitted.

A traffic violation observed Friday night by [name omitted] led to discovery of just over
300,000 pounds of marijuana in a 2004 Ford F-250 driven be a black male from Las
Vegas.

[name omitted] said he stopped the vehicle at the 32 mile marker (I-40) at 11:53 p.m., and
became suspicious of the driver’s nervousness, his reason for travel and the fact that the truck
bed was covered.

After giving consent for a search of the vehicle, the driver [name omitted] 34, admitted that
he was hauling marijuana, according to [name omitted]. The drug, found inside five cardboard
boxes, had an estimated street value of about $300,000.

[name omitted] was arrested for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver,
and the vehicle and marijuana were turned over to the 5th Judicial District Task Force.

Bond of $100,000 was set Monday be [name omitted].

The part of this story that raises questions is the fact that this man was arrested on Interstate 40, notorious for racial profiling; he was a black make from out of state. Also the traffic violation that was observed was never specified in the article. Maybe in the future that traffic violation that was observed needs to be made public.

This is just another example of unconstitutional racial profiling that is occurring on Arkansas highways. Again, I commend law enforcement efforts to curb the drug trade, however, the constitution must be honored for the sake of all.

Beebe Doctrine

This is some experpts from Mike Beebe’s announcement speech to day. Beebe laid out his campaign vision “Believe in Arkansas” and put forth three goals, or political promises; healthcare for Arkansas children, improved education in the state, and attracting more jobs to the state.

Asa Hutchinson was quick to come back that all of these measures would be accomplished by Beebe raising taxes in the state.

No comment from Rockefeller as it seems that he is still on vacation.

Beebe’s website is now online. www.mikebeebe.com

Step forward on poverty

One of the most important issues that face the United States and indeed Arkansas is poverty. Countless politicians have attempted to tackle the issue of poverty over the years and all have failed. Many will argue that government policies have driven people into poverty. I will argue that, from experiences that I have witnessed, teen pregnancy is a major factor that leads to a life of poverty.

As I grew up I have witnessed several incidents where people ranging in ages from 16 to 18 have given birth to children. Many of these people do not finish high school and most do not, or cannot, seek a college education. Arkansas has roughly 9,000 teenage births per year. Many of these teenagers are forced into low-income jobs saddled with the obligation of raising a child. Due to the high cost incurred in raising children, people who have kids in their teen years have a hard time making financial headway trapping them in poverty.

Many of these people will also end on public assistance causing a greater tax burden and draining state and federal budgets. The ideal situation is that parents will teach their kids to abstain from sexual activity until their children are married. This is simply not the case though as many people do not subscribe to this view of premarital sex. This is where the state should step in and educate students in both abstinence and safe sex practices.

Some would argue that the state should only provide students with contraceptives, while some argue teaching abstinence alone. These practices, taught separately, will not work in keeping the teen pregnancy rate down. People must realize that students in school are coming from widely ranging backgrounds, with some coming from religious backgrounds and some not. Schools must teach abstinence while providing students with contraceptives who choose to engage in sex. A certain percentage of students and teenagers will engage in sex regardless of the presence of abstinence teaching and must be provided these contraceptives.

The state ends up paying the bill for these teenage pregnancies in most cases, thus they should be in the preemptive business as well (abstinence + offering contraceptives). This would be a positive step forward in the fight against poverty. Not a cure, but a step.

Huckabee 'o8

This is an interesting blob about Mike Huckabee and his aspirations for a presidential run in 2008.

http://www.mikehuckabeepresident2008.blogspot.com/

Gov. Chairman Dean said recently in Chicago “[u]ntil President Bush and top Republicans reaffirm their support for the Voting Rights Act, they should stop courting black voters and showing up in black churches”.

Dean went on further to say “[i]f you aren't going to support the extension of the Voting Rights Act, I don't know what right you have to go to a black church and show your face.” Dean is quickly letting this get away from him and is further acting to polarize the country. The democrats have a fast growing problem on their hands with Dean and if they want to succeed in future elections they must portray an image of fighting for the average guy, not fighting for the right to be angry.

Here is the link to the story from the Chicago Tribune:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-0506130160jun13,1,6181033.story?ctrack=1&cset=true

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://rightinarkansas.blogspot.com/2005/06/gov-dean-deeply-concerned-for-blacks.html' title='Gov. Beebe must balance his official duties as state Attorney General with his soon to be official candidacy for the office of governor. Beebe must defend the state against the 48 school districts that are once again suing the state over, as they claim, inadequate educational reforms. This should be interesting considering that education will be a major issue in the ’06 governors race and Beebe will be in the middle of the legal fight in the Lake View case.

Jason Willett = Howard Dean?

This is what happens when a political party is losing substance and turns to an attack strategy. It is a noble and just cause. However, with that being said, every law enforcement agency is bound by the constitution, federal, and state laws to conduct this search in a lawful and constitutional manner. The problem arises that in a stretch of Interstate 40 in Western Arkansas there are a tremendous amount of drug arrest and seizures, resulting from the interception of out-of-state motorist and racially minorities. Many groups claim that racial profiling in Arkansas is a major problem. This is true. And once again I applaud the efforts of law enforcement in their dedication, but the law must be honored. It is a classic case of the “slippery slope”. If local law enforcement is allowed to racially profile on drugs, where will it stop?

Here is the scenario that plays out on I-40. Out-of-state drives, often minorities, are stopped by police (often by local law enforcement) for speeding or some other offence, and after the initial questioning the officer will seek permission to search the drivers automobile. And often-large amounts of drugs are found in these vehicles. Legislation that was adopted in Arkansas to ban this practice did not win the endorsement of any law enforcement agencies outside of the Arkansas State Police.

One reason that local law enforcement opposes these law prohibiting racial profiling is that is gives these local officials positive publicity in the wake of these huge drug busts. One such example of this practice happened recently. As I was leaving Arkansas recently I was on I-40, about 40-50 miles east of the Oklahoma boarder (get a map and do the math) traveling east when I passed a law police officer. The majority of the traffic was in excess of the posted speed limit. About 3 miles down the interstate, the local police passed me with his lights on at a high rate of speed. He was catching up to a SUV with Georgia license plates. This occurs all to often in this area. This car was maintaining the same rate of speed as the other motorists, but do to the fact that the driver was a minority and driving an out-of-state vehicle, he was targeted.

This is an issue of human rights violation that is outlaws by federal, state, and international law that prohibits such practices.

WinRock Out? This will indeed warrant watching.

The Truth

The post that is entitles “The Greatest of These is Love” by Skinner Layne on his website is exactly what people in America need to hear right now. Gov. Win Rockefeller's (R) position on abortion rights, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports. The e-mail includes a copy of a purported response Rockefeller gave to a 1998 Family Council candidate survey in which he said that he supported the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which struck down state bans on abortion. Rockefeller has said he plans to run for governor of Arkansas in 2006, and Saffa -- who is a self-proclaimed "conservative" -- said he sent the e-mail because he believes "there is no single issue of greater importance than abortion," according to the Democrat-Gazette. In response to the e-mail, Rockefeller said he is "offended" that Saffa's e-mail did not include his 2002 response to a Family Council survey in which he wrote, "I believe that abortion should be rare and available only when the quality of life of the mother or child is seriously endangered or in cases of rape or incest," adding, "Abortion is not acceptable for family planning." Rockefeller said he "changed his mind" about the Roe decision between 1998 and 2002, adding that he indicated limited support for Roe in 1998 because he believes there are a "few circumstances" under which abortion should be allowed and said he is "sworn to uphold the law of the land," according to the Democrat-Gazette. However, Rockefeller said he "unequivocally" opposes abortion rights, according to the Democrat-Gazette. The only problem is that Beebe is traveling on the budget of the office of Arkansas Attorney General, the current office that Beebe holds. This is just unethical. Plain and simple. Beebe will have to cease this when he finally officially announces his candidacy for governor on June 14th. Yet the Arkansas Times chooses not to make an issue out of this, rather they would like to promote vague and weak ethical charges against Asa Hutchinson. The Republican primary is 11 months away and the Times is making almost daily attacks against Asa Hutchinson. The fact is that they, as well as other Democrats/Socialists/Communists/Liberals are scared that Asa will win and walk all over Beebe in the general election. I am certain that this will be the trend on the part of certain people for the next 11 months to bash Asa daily in an attempt to thwart his primary victory. Problem is….these attacks will quickly grow old and the public will nt be willing to put up with this for 11 months. Well what really struck me about the blog was the title. "DNC: Kicking Ass - Daily Dispatches from the DNC". Can the Democrats, and Dean, do anymore to further damage their party? They faced a devastating lose in '04 at the hands of evangelical Christians, and what do they do, name their blog "Kicking Ass".

Now I do understand that it is a play on the icon of the Democratic Party, the donkey, but come on. Dean, as far as Republicans are concerned, is the perfect man to lead the DNC. He does more damage to the Democrats than Republicans could ever hope to do.

On a side note, there is a "mug shot" of Tom DeLay on the DNC's website. That is ridiculous. But be certain this is the work of Dean. Can we as Republicans now claim, as Hillary did during MonicaGate, that it is a vast left-wing conspiracy to get DeLay. I think that we can be safe in assuming that.

http://www.democrats.org/blog/index.html

Huckabee 2008?

A presidential run for Huckabee in 2008 does not seem to be a far fetched idea, according to Brummett. This is very simple. Bumpers left the state will the intention never to return. He simply thinks that he is to good to come back to the state. He now lives in suburban Maryland, far, far, from his humble roots in rural Franklin County.

When someone "serves" the state of Arkansas and then skips town, people just tend to forget, or just don't care. Sounds like two other people that used Arkansas as a spring board for bigger and better things, Bill and Hillary. They are right at home in NY. As long as they are all out of here Arkansan's can consider it an upgrade. Win - Win for everyone.

The dems will attack Asa

This is my projection. The democrats in Arkansas will launch an all out attack on Asa Hutchinson during the Republican primary. Sounds weird but it will happen. As it will turn out, Mike Beebe will be the only Democrat running for governor. Beebe and the democrats will much rather face Rockefeller in the general election and they will make every effort to see that Rockefeller wins the Republican primary. Beebe would be in a better position to compete against Rockefeller than Hutchinson.

Again, a disclaimer, this is just my prediction, but i have a feeling that i will be right.

Hendrix Prof Watch

Well here we go. It seems that the liberal suck hole in Conway, known as Hendrix, it set to turnout a professor, turned hopeful politician, Jay Barth. Barth would be the first openly gay politician in Arkansas' history. Barth is a political science professor that obviously is one of the most liberal on the political scene. It seems that Barth is a member of the Arkansas delegation of the ACLU, and a member of the Arkansas chapter of Planned Parenthood. Great, just what we need, one of the most liberal faculty members in the state of Arkansas running for office. Let me explain something here to everyone. The reason that colleges and universities exist in America is to give people like Barth a job. This guy could not survive in the real world. People like him could not make it the way that normal people live. Not to fear...a watch will be established, dubbed the "Barth Watch" in which I will track the progress of Barth's decision to run for office. If there is one person that must be opposed at all risk, it is Barth.

Bow out now WinRock

Well, an editorial in the Southwest Times took a hit at Lt. Governor Win Rockefeller. At a meeting with AP writers and newspaper guys, Asa Hutchinson and Rockefeller engaged in a small debate to let the writers know the two Republicans stand on the issues. Well, in the grand tradition of lackluster political performance on the part of the Rockefeller family, Win fell on his face. This is a case where Win Rock needs to, as the editorial points out, take his enormous sum of money and high tail it to the hills. Rockefeller has a slim chance of winning the Republican primary at best. He is so socially liberal he cannot connect with Republican voters in Northwest Arkansas, the area of the state that will likely determine the primary and the general election.
